I love all the old pictures etc. She writes about her first 72 or so years of life and I'm willing to bet that her life was not much different than other women who lead lives in a secondary position to their husbands. Rick was blessed with intelligence, athleticism, and good looks. Text is supported by fine illustrations and decent photos.. I was so surprised at two things: how delicious the recipes were and how effective the plan was in helping me lose weight. Readers who are familiar with Betty's academician ex-husband Paul Fussell from such works as "The Great War and Modern Memory" and "Class" will find him presented here in less than nostalgic terms.
Betty is very much a person of her generation--not a strident feminist--and all the more reason to cheer for her when she sets out on her own and becomes a writer specializing in (what else?) food.
