Camping overnight in a draw on the newly released lands of the old XIT Ranch, Will Gantry suddenly feels an odd and welcome sense of belonging. He becomes friends with Dan, a deputy-sheriff, a beautiful woman and a young boy. He begins to make solid plans for the future that include an old cowboy named Pete and the professor. Will decides his idea of wandering down to Old Mexico can wait -- maybe forever.
This is another book on global warming, engagingly and gracefully written, that will become a target of the deniers, who, like creationists, close their eyes to the science and celebrate willful ignorance. As Caputo states, "I have not been authorized from on high to settle that venerable debate". I feel the book is fairly elementary and is not for experienced hobbyists. Unfortunately, I cannot judge this point with authority having served myself as an officer in the Army for a number of years.
The characters are extremely well presented, warts and all. The story line is fabulously written, the lead characters are very interesting protagonists and the supporting players add the right touch to this period piece. BTW, Clooney's movie based loosely on this book will make a lot more sense if you read the book first.
