Editorial : In the last fifteen years, there has been renewed interest in the nature and purpose of the fourth commandment and what many refer to as the Puritan Sabbath. By God's grace a conversation has begun that is helping many come to a fuller appreciation for and use of the Lord's Day. Pastor Ryan McGraw's voice in the conversation needs to be heard. As he says, I have sought to address what I believe to be the primary underlying issues behind the widespread neglect of the Sabbath day. Pastor McGraw's book is chock-full of biblical insights, freshly applied to the issue of the Christian Sabbath. I have been helped by the book and know that each one who reads it will be as well. --Joseph A. Pipa Jr., President, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Far too many Christians only believe in nine commandments. The command to keep a day of rest on which to worship our triune covenant Lord is deemed as irrelevant or no longer binding. Providing helpful exegesis and theological cons
In The Day of Worship, author Ryan M. McGraw tackles the oft neglected biblical topic of Sabbath. Many books have been written on the day of rest, yet most believers still do not observe this holy day. McGraw discusses the biblical basis for the Sabbath, but he also addresses why the Sabbath may be neglected. He also includes discussions on Isaiah 58, legalism, and some practical observations.Table of Contents: Introduction The General Importance of Sabbath The Importance of God's Day of Worship The Presuppositions of Isaiah 58:13-14 Revisiting Isaiah 58:13-14 Worldliness What Is Missing? Add to that the unlikely meeting with people that I suppose were reincarnated centuries later it didn't work for me. It looked like an interesting story so I picked it up and read it. Even in you didn't care about Torrance, this book is filled to the brim with serious, scholarly theology - methodological, dogmatic and practical - and charitable, constructive and critical engagement. There was quite a bit I learned from this (and I thought I was already pretty savvy). Their romance eventually gives rise to Barrett Browning's beautiful sonnets.
I enjoyed the research that went into the books, and especially liked the "fact and fiction" section at the end, where the author (Nancy Moser) goes into which bits of each chapter are historical fact, and which were fudged or invented for storytelling purposes.
The author includes the "Sonnets from the Portuguese" at the end of the book, which I feel I enjoyed and understood much better after reading this story.
