Beyond the Black River is set in the Jacksonian period in North America, although the natives are called "Picts" and the settlers use bows and arrows instead of guns. This book gives mentorship to women of all ages and stages of their lives. Second, it's critical. I'll just add my two cents and say this book was horribly written and way overpriced when it was published in 2005. If you're a big fan of the play "Into the Woods," you'll find this lighter but equally entertaining.
