This is a history of the machine and a critical study of its effects on civilization. Mumford has drawn on every aspect of life to explain the machine and to trace its social results. She had been more of a student than a party girl but very much effected by patriotism and a sense of debt towards the fighting men and later the returning vets. It needs to be updated by the authors, to truly be helpful.. I also know that she still has a good relationship with Bill Porter and still helps him to this day.

I also saw somebody say that they thought the photos in the book seem amateurish. Much of it is as enjoyable as a good history book, and Kinsman makes his love of "private science" (the individual thought processes by which scientists make their discoveries) apparent. Six or seven years later it's not even relevant anymore and obsolete. This book had been sitting on my shelf for close to 20 years before I picked it up recently for a project. I'm amazed that so many people are commenting about how Shelly wrote the book for "selfish reasons" and to "tell her own story". This was not a pre-planned documentary, after all.
